Kenneth Jay Lane

A life spent making fake chic

Affordable glamour was at the heart of Kenneth Jay Lane’s exotic costume jewellery rhinestone, resin and gilt creations which took inspiration from high jewellers like Tiffany & Co. and Cartier. He joked that his pieces were "faque" and "junque", but the wealthy loved to mix his glass beads with their real diamonds and working girls saved up for his pearls, brooches and cuffs. His stellar clientele included Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Diana Vreeland and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who all considered him a friend. "I myself am a fabulous fake," Mr Lane once remarked of himself. Indeed the brilliant American costume jewellery designer, who from lowly roots built a global empire from fake baubles and a jet set life as glittering as his jewels, ensured that it became not only acceptable but chic to wear fakes.
